Sherry-Lee Wisor's pop band, happy, continues the rambunctious Edmonton
alt-country-pop-punk tradition exemplified by unsung indie bands like jr. gone wild and idyll tea. Songs Featuring the songs of Sherry-Lee, Happy consists of Robin Hunter of the Imagineers and the 6 foot Bullies, Graham Guest and Red Shag Carpet's, Allan Pickard.
1989- 1991--started playing bass in the Edmonton music scene in 1989 with Evelyn Tremble,
which consisted of Ian Martin (Idyll Tea), Dave Lawson (Jr Gone Wild), Graham Guest and Tim
Anderson.
1992-1995-- after leaving Evelyn Tremble, I formed a group called The Bodkins. As I was not
a singer at the time I recruited several musicians from the Edmonton scene who would take
turns as front-person. Sherry-Lee booked all performances including North Country Fair and
numerous club dates in Edmonton and region. They were featured on the CJSR program, Great
Western Ballroom. Members included—Mike McDonald (Jr Gone Wild), Luann Kowalek, Anthony
Pavlic (Captain Nemo), Reverend Rockin’ Roland (Jerry Jerry & the Sons of Rhythm
Orchestra), Paul ‘Duke’ Paetz (Invisible Jug Band, Jr. Gone Wild, Mike McDonald Band, etc),
Terry Cox (Jr. Gone Wild), and others. Recorded one demo.
1994-2000-- Bassist for Hookahman—highly well-received band on the festival circuit,
Hookahman was composed of members of the acting and improv comedy community. Performances
included Dawson City Folk Festival, North Country Fair, several engagements with the
Edmonton Fringe, Regina Folk festival and numerous other festival, cabaret and folk club
engagements. Members included Wes Borg & Joe Bird (Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie), Jason
Kodie (Le Fuzz & director of Edmonton Chant- the French Language Festival), Cathy Derkach
(extensive experience in theatre including musical directing positions at the Citadel),
Jeff Page (now teaching drama at the U of A), and more. Recorded a self-titled, full length
record.
1994-1998-- Bassist for the Mike McDonald Band. The first project Mike started
after the break-up of Jr. Gone Wild, MMB was a high-energy 3 piece pop band.
Engagements included the Edmonton Folk Fest, North Country Fair an extensive touring
through Western Canada. Recorded a full length, unreleased record.
1995-2000-- Bassist for the Luann Kowalek Band. Engagements included the Edmonton Calgary
and Ottawa Folk Fests, several on-air performances with the CBC, and touring throughout
Canada. The Luann Kowalek Band shared the stage with Hawksley Workman, Ron Hawkins and many
others. Recorded on her record, Late Night Heroes.
2000-2003-- Bassist and booker for Jerry Jerry & the Sons of Rhythm Orchestra.
Upon Jerry’s arrival back to Western Canada, after several years in Montreal, the Sons of
Rhythm re-formed with original members, Ed Dobek (Jr. Gone Wild) and Reverend Rockin’
Roland (Dusty Chaps), as well as new members, myself and Anthony Pavlic (Captain Nemo). I
booked a cross-Canada tour to Montreal as well as extensive shows in Western Canada over my
time with them. Recorded a live record, titled ‘Night of the Living Jerry’.
2004-2005-- Bassist for Po’Girl. Members included Trish Klein (the Be Good Tanyas), Allison
Russell and Diona Davies (Carolyn Mark, Geoff Berner), Po’Girl hired me to do Western
Canadian shows, an extensive tour of the U.K. the Frostbite Festival and several dates in
the U.S. As I lived in Edmonton and they were based in Vancouver, the band flew me out for
concentrated touring. Recorded a one-song demo with Po’Girl and Be Good Tanyas, Frazey Ford
and Sam Parton.
2005-2007-- Singer/Songwriter/Bassist/Guitar player for the Digs—a band co-fronted by
myself and Phill Saylor Wisor of American touring act, The Shiftless Rounders. The Digs
played shows through Western Canada as well as some touring through the southern United
States. Recorded a demo.
Late 2007- Present-- Singer/Songwriter/Bass/Banjo/Acoustic Guitar for Happy and Sherry-Lee
& her Handsome Fellas. Happy’s first full performance earned them 2nd place on a ‘Best
Shows of 2007’ list in See Magazine. Sherry-Lee has been performing regularly in Western
Canada and Italy and has developed bands in New York, Vancouver and Milan.Sherry-Lee has been writing extensively over the last 5 years and spent many hours performing live: from cabaret shows; to performances in Italy, Honolulu, New Orleans and around Canada; busking; hosting a local venue Jam session night for the last 4 years; and any looking for any excuse whatsoever to play. She has also performed with C.R. Avery, Dennis Lakusta, Old Reliable, Darrek Anderson & the Guaranteed, Bill Bourne, recorded with Carolyn Mark, and more.

New Sounds: Happy
Mike Garth /
mailto:michael@vueweekly.comHappy's debut cleverly weaves together a range of folky styles,
instrumentation, tempos and lyrics. Sherry-Lee Wisor's breathy, at
times near-whisper vocals are reminiscent of both Martha Wainwright and
Lucinda Williams' stylings, while an accordion and B3 organ accompany
the rich, yet simple and catchy, songwriting. "Fishin'" sees the group
perfect its "weave," Wisor's vocals balancing the instrumentation of
Robin Hunter, Graham Guest and Al Pickard beautifully. No two songs
cover the exact same ground, making for a broad scope that showcases
the group's wealth of songwriting prowess, as opposed to a consistent
flow. Nonetheless, an impressive debut EP from one of Edmonton's finest
musical collaborations.
