About Sébastien Tellier
Sebastien Tellier “Politics”
Sébastien Tellier
is an exceptional, highly personal & intimate artist echoing such other
one-offs as Robert Wyatt, Syd Barrett or Serge Gainsbourg.
An individual, an
indomitable post mortal, a Parisian poet and a wild man of many, many talents.
On the album
'Politics' he has been supported by other great talent from sources as diverse
as the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, filmmaker/producer Quentin Dupieux (aka Mr
Oizo), legendary producer/mixer Philippe Zdar, whose La Funk Mob records exported
French cool before Daft Punk, together with the original funky drummer, Tony
Allen, a legend who could be said to have had greater influence on the
invention of Afrobeat than Fela Kuti himself, whose bands he lead for years
from his 60's hi-life act Koola Labitos, through the legendary Afrika '70 &
beyond.
Quentin Dupieux,
who co-produced 'La Tuerie'
from the album 'Politics', directed the video for 'Oh Malheur Chez O'Malley', a
song featured on Sébastien's 2001 debut album 'L'Incroyable Verité', where Tellier
attempted to skate in a forest haunted by an omnipresent jogger and then
subsequently offered him a leading role in his first movie 'Nonfilm', as a
photogenic, charismatic leader in a world where you can film without a camera. "Abstract,
keep it abstract!" a voice rang in Tellier's head when the time came to
score the film, with Tony Allen striking the perfect chord for 'Bye-Bye's rhythms.
It is no surprise that Sébastien has more recently also been working on the
music for Universal film, 'Narco', starring Belgian actor, Benoît Poelvoorde,
perhaps infamous for his starring role in cult classic, 'Man Bites Dog',
a blacker than noir
study of serial killing shot with comedic edge in grainy docu style.
Tellier's
multi-media edge is further visible if you watch the superbly produced
animation for 'Broadway', in which he again stars, shot in New York City.
Sébastien toured
his debut album, 'L'Incroyable Verité' in 2001 in support of AIR,
across three continents over 80 gigs, leaving people awestruck by the
unconventional emotional power of his music to the extent that an audience
member in October 2001 said "this is the first time I've seen people
recall the supporting act!" Now with "Politics", prepare to see
the Tellier live experience, either pared down, accompanied by a pianist or,
more numerous, dexterously assisted by Tony Allen and Sebastien's partner, Pamelia
Kurstin, possibly the world's finest Theremin player!
