Sebastien Tellier is one of these few rare bred artists, combining virtuosity, humour and overall talent reminding us of entertainers à la Robert Wyatt, Syd Barret or Serge Gainsbourg. His live performances are considered as being intense, emotional experiences hypnotising the audience. In 2001 Sebastien went on his first world tour with his début album “L'Incroyable Verité”, as the opening group for AIR, playing 80 dates in total and delivering his uncompromising mixture to an international audience for the first time: His track “Fantino” was instantly used for Sofia Copola's highly acclaimed film “Lost In Translation”. It is not only his talent and his physical presence on stage, which confer his shows that special touch, but also Sebastian’s choice of collaborating artists.

For his second album, Politics, released in 2004, he teamed up with a wide range of artists, including Tony Allen, the inventor of afro-beat and one of the most influential drummers of his time. Further Sebastien Tellier collaborated with his long term partner, Pamelia Kurstin, maybe the best Theremin player in the world as well as with the always excellent pianist Simon Dalmais. The results from these collaborations can be more than exhibited. The seminal piece “La Ritournelle” was one of the most anticipated releases in the United Kingdom in 2005.

“One day, Sebastien Tellier’s slow-burning club anthem will be huge”
NME, January 2005.

His work finds a lot of appreciation among fellow artists and got him a place on stage as the opening act on Royksopp's European tour, as well as the The Magic Numbers or Moby's tour support in France. Always searching for new styles and opportunities to develop his musical universe Sebastien Tellier also collaborated with the Bulgarian Symphonic Orchestra or the Parisian Boule Noire Orchestra.

2006 saw the release of Sebastien Tellier's “Sessions” album, consisting of acoustic reinterpretations from his previous “Politics” album. Besides keeping himself busy with production, remixing other artists and lending his voice to other musicians Sebastien also made a step into the movie world. He played the main role in Quentin Dupieux's film – Non Film - a movie of a charismatic and photogenic leader in a world where we can film without a camera, as well as Dupieux's latest film “Steak”, released in June 2007. Furthermore he has produced the soundtrack for Narco, a French production starring Benoît Poelvoorde, Guillaume Canet and Zabou Breitman, as well as contributing to Daft Punk's “Electroma” film with a track called “Universe”.

2008 will see the release of Sebastian Tellier's fourth album, on Record Makers, entitled “Sexuality”, which is produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, one half of Daft Punk. For this album Sebastien is exploring his more electronic side of things, changing one or the other instrument for a synthesizer but always staying true to his musical roots: deep, soulful, romantic music.

07-01-2008 Biography Politics

Sebastien Tellier “Politics”

Sébastien Tellier
is an exceptional, highly personal & intimate artist echoing such other
one-offs as Robert Wyatt, Syd Barrett or Serge Gainsbourg.

An individual, an
indomitable post mortal, a Parisian poet and a wild man of many, many talents.

On the album
'Politics' he has been supported by other great talent from sources as diverse
as the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra, filmmaker/producer Quentin Dupieux (aka Mr
Oizo), legendary producer/mixer Philippe Zdar, whose La Funk Mob records exported
French cool before Daft Punk, together with the original funky drummer, Tony
Allen, a legend who could be said to have had greater influence on the
invention of Afrobeat than Fela Kuti himself, whose bands he lead for years
from his 60's hi-life act Koola Labitos, through the legendary Afrika '70 &
beyond.

Quentin Dupieux,
who co-produced 'La Tuerie'
from the album 'Politics', directed the video for 'Oh Malheur Chez O'Malley', a
song featured on Sébastien's 2001 debut album 'L'Incroyable Verité', where Tellier
attempted to skate in a forest haunted by an omnipresent jogger and then
subsequently offered him a leading role in his first movie 'Nonfilm', as a
photogenic, charismatic leader in a world where you can film without a camera. "Abstract,
keep it abstract!" a voice rang in Tellier's head when the time came to
score the film, with Tony Allen striking the perfect chord for 'Bye-Bye's rhythms.
It is no surprise that Sébastien has more recently also been working on the
music for Universal film, 'Narco', starring Belgian actor, Benoît Poelvoorde,
perhaps infamous for his starring role in cult classic, 'Man Bites Dog',

a blacker than noir
study of serial killing shot with comedic edge in grainy docu style.

Tellier's
multi-media edge is further visible if you watch the superbly produced
animation for 'Broadway', in which he again stars, shot in New York City.

Sébastien toured
his debut album, 'L'Incroyable Verité' in 2001 in support of AIR,
across three continents over 80 gigs, leaving people awestruck by the
unconventional emotional power of his music to the extent that an audience
member in October 2001 said "this is the first time I've seen people
recall the supporting act!" Now with "Politics", prepare to see
the Tellier live experience, either pared down, accompanied by a pianist or,
more numerous, dexterously assisted by Tony Allen and Sebastien's partner, Pamelia
Kurstin, possibly the world's finest Theremin player!

Sebastien
Tellier is a highly personal artist,
echoing
such other one-offs as Robert Wyatt, Syd Barrett or Serge Gainsbourg. An
individual, a Parisian poet and a wild man of many talents.

Thanks to his two remarkable albums released on Record Makers,
L’Incroyable Vérité (2001) and Politics (2004, re-issued in 2005 due to
a strong popular demand), Sebastien Tellier toured with the likes of Air, Moby,
Royksöpp and The Magic Numbers and played his acoustic set all over the world.

His
performances have now reached an artistic peak,
becoming a bare and intense live experience. That is why, in one day (December
30th), an acoustic session of his whole repertoire was recorded together with
pianist Simon Dalmais.

The result of this session is precisely called ‘Sessions’,
an intimate and essential album. ‘Sessions’ is a collection of out of time
tracks, in the tradition of the most gifted singers/songwriters. As a bonus for
this recording with French producer Alf (Air, Phoenix…), Sebastien Tellier
recorded one cover of rare song « La Dolce Vita » from French artist Christophe,
and an unreleased track « Classic » !

07-01-2008 Biography L'Incroyable Verité

Sebastien Tellier
is a 25 year old musician. He lives in Paris
in the 17th arrondissement.

« L’incroyable vérité » is his first album.
His previous discographic publications consist of a participation in the Source
Rocks compilation, in 1998, with « Fantino », which was noticed by
the magazine Rolling Stone (« (…)
one of the loneliest sounds you will hear this year.
», December
1998).

« L’incroyable vérité » was recorded between
September 1999 and March 2000. Sebastien Tellier plays most of the instruments
and produced his album himself. It was mixed by Quentin Dupieux and Sebastien
Tellier in July 2000 with the help of Guillaume Lebraz. Sébastien Tellier and
Mathieu Tonetti wrote the lyrics to the songs.

« L’incroyable vérité » is an album about
life. You can hear a dog singing,, a woman screaming, and legs growing.

Sebastien Tellier recommends that you listen to his
album alone and by candle-light.

The album is available on vinyl since mid December 2000.
The CD format is available since March 2001.

His second album will be released in March 2003 .

07-01-2008 Biography Sexuality

2001 – The Sébastien
Tellier story began with L’incroyable
verite
– A record filled with sorrow, made for crying under candlelight. A
carefree album mixed by Quentin Dupieux, completely devoid of drums /
percussion. An introspective journey to the boundaries of the universe and
intimacy where Sebastien, drowsy and bedraggled, embarks on a search for lost
time without leaving his bed (Pink Floyd, Robert Wyatt, a certain mindset of
the 70’s). An entity borne out of wonderings in the gardens of French
music. At Record Makers HQ (Air’s former
label), the singularity of the record is thoroughly endorsed.

2004 -
Sébastien
Tellier opens his bedroom window and discovers something crazy: the outside
world. With his second album, Politics,
(Tony Allen on drums, Philippe Zdar on production duties), he covers the globe
in huge strides (Africa, US, South America …)
to try and make sense of it all. La Ritournelle, an epic, romantic piece, really
caused a stir. It convinced every listener of one thing - Sébastien Tellier is
an important artist.

2006. After Sessions, a process of catching up and
reinvigorating his repertoire (as well as Christophe’s sublime “Dolce Vita” )
with the help of Simon Dalmais on piano, Sébastien locked himself away into a
Parisian recording studio Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (one half of Daft Punk)
behind the controls to produce the next instalment of his adventures.

2007. Summer time in Biarritz.
A bar
on the beach. Sébastien Tellier, immaculately dressed in a white suit, is
leaning on the bar, sipping a Martini. In the distance the sun is setting, some
bronzed girls are heading nonchalantly towards The Blue Cargo. Sébastien clicks
his fingers: the sounds of Sexuality,
his third album, fill the room. Eleven tracks which cover the whole night in
less than an hour, from dusk ‘til dawn. He whispers a few words in our ears
about each of them.

-

Roche: « I always used to spend my holidays there. I always wanted to
return, play my music and say to myself “Tonight, I’m king of the night”. In
this song, the sun is beating down and I’m having really intense fantasies
about girls in bikinis. If I wanted to seduce them, I’d play this song which is
a European or French twist on the sexual enchantment that you’d associate with
American R’n’B. »

-
Kilometer:
« With this song, you should try and think of Justin Timberlake,
but from Berlin
instead – a mix of American sensuality and cold Teutonic precision. It’s my
vision of German love: the motorway which runs for miles. »

-
Look:
« This is a song about the Latin style of seduction – completely
based on appearances. I like knowing that a woman has taken the time to make
herself look attractive. «Look» is about the little bit of skin between the
mini skirt and stockings. I’m talking about sex here in a wise and serious
manner, like an analyst elegantly trying to pick up girls in a cocktail bar in New York. »

-
Divine:
This is my tribute to the Beach Boys and the Juicy Fruits (from the 1974
musical Phantom of the Paradise). It’s about a
time of innocence – when having fun was more important than picking up girls. I
visualise a bunch of kids playing on the beach and I’d really love to play with
them.

Let’s stop for a second. With Sexuality, is Sébastien Tellier really
turning on the charm? Situated somewhere between the soundtrack for a porno
film and a digitized soul, at the same time erotic and synthesised, does this
mean his latest incarnation brings to mind an electronic Latin lover? Sexuality can be conceived as the carriage
of Casanova mounted on Hummer wheels. Here we find the old Europe of
Christophe, Ennio Morricone and Giorgio Moroder flirting outrageously with the
new school of contemporary R’n’B, bringing Justin Timberlake, Beyonce or
Timbaland to mind for 51 minutes of an intense, technological sensuality. Time
to regain consciousness:

-
Pomme :
«This is the song which is most representative of the whole album. I
see it as the most erotic as well as the sweetest. The apple is the forbidden
fruit.

The sun waits until the lovers
have finished making love before rising. He doesn’t want to disturb them. »

- Une
heure :
«I’m singing here about my admiration for bisexuals who have the chance
of sampling all the types of pleasure. Bisexuality shows the greatest freedom
of spirit – the genuinely cool people are bisexuals. It was the first erotic
song that I wrote; I wanted to make it last an hour. It triggered something off
in my mind, which resulted in the album.

-
Sexual Sportswear:
«The first single. An instrumental. This track is the
best representation of my relationship with Guy-Man: My moving harmonies mixed
with the efficiency and lightness of Daft Punk. For me, the ultimate fantasy is
a girl in a tracksuit working out in her living room. She has two coaches who
make her work her glutes and her abs…things can only get messy from there.»

-
Elle :
«Composed with Guy-Man, it’s the «Fox and the Hound» song of the album.
It’s impossible to reach orgasm without some closeness and tenderness at least.
The key to sex is love. It’s a very pure song which resembles heaven. »

-
Fingers of Steel :
«This song is about the Kubrickian fantasy of the
machine which is self-aware. The computer touches me here sensually with its
fingers of steel. From our union comes this song. »

-
Manty :
«I love classical music; it’s a huge inspiration for me. My starting
point here is the universe of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette: a mix of discretion and glitz which for me is
extremely sexy. I imagine myself in the middle of making love on a sailboat as
large as Italy.
This is what happened to me this summer. Living your fantasies is for me a good
example of a successful life. »

L’amour
et la violence :
«It’s the title which sums up what I’ve lived through
in the most profound way. It shows that the rest of the album is a huge fantasy
where I’m searching for intensity in the superficial. With «Love and Violence»,
I’m finally revealing myself – I have neither the skin of a stallion nor a
virgin, I’m naked and I ask that people judge me as I really am.

The last piano notes, so pure,
so light of «L’amour and la violence» drift off into the warm air like little
propaganda leaflets jettisoned from an aeroplane. On each note, printed in
golden letters: SEBASTIEN TELLIER –
SEXUALITY
. The sun can finally come up.
