OXAÏ ROURA is a composer, a multi instrumentalist, a singer and a searcher in ethnomusicology.
1) THE FORMATIVE YEARS
He begun to learn the art of drumming when he was 3 years old. Fascinated by the ancient sacred african polyrythms he received serious teachings from some of the greatest masters of the drums ( Famoudou KONATE, Mamady KEÏTA, Maré SANOGO taught him MANDINGO rythms and chants) Orlando POLEO & Martha GALLARAGA taught him YOROUBA chants and rythms (congas & batas). Very interested in the traditionnal way and -in the same time- really open minded, he made gigs and recordings ,during the 90's, with a lot of different kind of bands (Metal, Reggae, Jazz and Jazz fusion, Salsa, Electro...)
2) THE PRODUCTIONS
In the year 2003, Oxaï composed and produced his first solo CD named "THE EXU EXPERIENCE (ATABAQUES 'N' BASS VOL.1)". this cd allowed him to officialise the birth of a new style that he created: the ATABAQUES 'N' BASS (a special mix of mystical afro brazilian rythms originated from the CANDOMBLE Kêtu/Nago and electronic sounds). This CD has been rewarded by the FUNDACAO PIERRE VERGER ( Bahia/ Brasil).
In the year 2004 Oxaï created the SPIRITUAL HERITAGE ORKESTRA. In this band with the venezualian percussionist GUSTAVO OVALLES (ex-OMAR SOSA) he mixed afro-cuban rythms and chants of the SANTERIA/BEMBE musical traditions with electronic stuff: the style BEMBELEKTRO was born. After some good gigs with this band, Oxaï produced a concert live DVD named "SPIRITUAL HERITAGE PART.1: SECRETS OF AFRIKA (LIVE)" distributed in south america only.
In the year 2008 Oxaï is back with a brand new solo CD called AFRO AMAZONIAN SPIRIT (NATUROSOPHIA). This CD is the first recording of a new musical style he created called the AFROAMAZONIKA ( a mix of west afrikan and amazonian spiritual rythms and chants with elements from the electronica). Some of the instrumental compositions have been realised to be soundtracks for original CHOREGRAPHIES created by the AZAMIAH dance company and the OBATALA association. But now, Oxaï would like to work with people involved in Cinema, Video games, Electronic arts and more...

What could be hidden behind this three enigmatic words?
The answer is: a strange and very unique new musical style never heard before called the AFROAMAZONIKA; in fact it is an unusual combination of sacred african music, soundscapes born in the amazon jungle and weird sounds taken from the electronica underground scene.
Thanks to the Afroamazonika, the ancient african gods come into the computers, the shamans of the amazon jungle perform their incantations on jamaican dub and the sacred songs of the maroons – these descendants of renegade slaves who succeeded to defeat the colonial systems- are mixed with the languages of electronic instruments...
So, these 9 titles (maybe you'll find a number 10...) are creating a vortex where the cyber-punk futuristic universe encounters the ancient african wisdom and the out-of-time amazon jungle.
This cd is inviting us to realise an unordinary trip, a kind of lucid dream full of mysterious images that come from parallel realities...

09-04-2008 AFRO-AMAZONIAN SPIRIT: NATUROSOPHIA (SPIRITUAL HERITAGE PART.3)
As an individual, a part of my deepest roots are Afro-Amazonian ;By
Afro-Amazonian I mean a specific form of culture born from the
encounters of different Native Indian and Afrikan elements (some
European and Asian features can be found in it too).
The fact is that only a few persons in the world know the existence of
the Afro-Amazonian culture today; for several reasons, the time has
come for a mutation of this situation. Why ? Because to my mind
different components of the Afro-Amazonian culture(s)-like NATUROSOPHIA
or teachings of Wisdom based on the observance and respect of the
fundamental Natural Laws- can bring useful tools to the whole world in
several domains as Medecine (psychic and physical), Self Realization,
Energy, Balance between Nature and Technology,Sound therapy, Dance
therapy, Art therapy…. One of my intuition is that some
Afrikan-Amazonian cultural elements WILL BE useful for the future
generations…
