"A World Inside"
My first solo record was conceived and recorded for a personal desire to record some instrumental tracks with any limit of style, genre, lenght. In the beginning my project was to pay a little homage to those guitar players who had a deep influence on me and my approach as a guitarist.
As usually happens the working process was a little different and soon I've found myself thinking and recording not only as a guitar player but more as a composer who tries to fix his musical ideas using tecnology and different real instruments, the thing that I prefer in creating music, and in the end it happened to have in my hands and in my ears a collection that represents the different shapes and pieces of my musical worlds, from blues and classic 70 rock (those very early seventies were the years where I began to put my hands on the strings at 12 in 1972), rock'n'roll, acustic ballads, new age, latin-jazz-rock, jungle, fusion.
I was in the late 90's (and still I am now!!) in this histerical state of mind, after 20 years of music, to put down as soon as possible some ideas, to see the point I was coming to, and from where I could start again. Soon I'd found that I feel always at the beginning of something for some reasons. Something to learn, to correct, to live with, to listen again and again, to throw away or take it again and givin' it new life. Composing or studying an instrument technique for me is always a new process to discover, to respect, and to develop slowly, with a lot of time, patience and humility.
The first track I wrote was "First Step" in 1996 in 5/4 and it is musically dedicated to Pat Metheny, and as a young father to my first daughter Giulia born in december of that year. "Through your eyes" was written having in mind the great Dave Gilmour (P.Floyd) and his unique sounds and style. "San Josè" and "One night in Tijuana" were written as a personal homage to one of my first guitar hero: Carlos Santana.
There are some acoustic tracks like "Your Smile" again for my first daughter Giulia when she was a little baby and she had a big smile that was so astonishing, and so pure, this precious little bear made you forget any other bad thing or problem; the slow bossa "Silent Move" dedicated to brazilian music expecially to Mr. Tom Jobim and dedicated also to my dear friend musician and guitar trainer Mino Mistrorigo. The last track in the cd is "Behind a cloud" a little acoustic piece for my dear and lovely sister Lina passed away too young.
There was some computer programming using the historical Atari 1040 from 1996 al 1999 but a lot of parts of bass and percussion and some keyboards parts were played live by me, and all guitar parts are mine.
I can say now I am a little proud of this little record realized turning on different record machines in 4 years, in different moments of my days and nights, "....I'v seen fire and I've seen rain....." sometimes full days with no stop, then no recording for one month, or two weeks, then record again in the deep of the night or in the early mornings, with gigs to play, a growing family to attend, nights asleep, new born Giulia often awaken all night long! There may be probably some mistakes, it is not a perfect record, but it's sincere, it's me and looking back to 8 years ago I must say that I like still now what came out from our house. It doesn't bore me after five minutes! (maybe after 25......oops!). But I hope you like it and I will be glad to hear from you, it will help me.
Two of the tracks of this record "First Step" and "Silent Move" are included in the Live Set of the latin-jazz group Morrocoy of which I am proudly a part as guitar player since 2005. You can visit me at www.myspace.com/beppebertolino, there are different links to listen and/or buy my music and Morrocoy's music, with tour dates, bio, photo and more, thank you.
