From Barreiro (Portugal) to the world; why isn't that a surprise? The new record's called "Whatever" and it's a 6-song EP, the follow-up from the 2006 Demo "I Need Something Stronger". When it comes to the music, there are no secrets. Valério (Guitar/Vocals), Ernani (Bass/Back Vocals) and Luis (Drums) make it very clear that they are rooted in the 90's Alternative Rock, the one which spawned from Seattle. The band itself says it. Having this in mind (with all the risks attached), Skewer don't look for something different to stand out; they just seek to play (and well) what they want - whether you like it or not. At it's core, "Whatever" floods joy and a great will to do what they want: Having a great time from playing music. Without any intricate technicalities, "Whatever" is a pure, raw and revivalist work, a way to keep believing unconditionally in something that shouldn't be forgotten. "Whatever" is just that: a huge, personal way to feel music, without constraints, but without that 'je ne sais quoi'... That's Skewer for you, ladies and gentlemen.

Rock, pure rock. Grunge if you want, are the references that Skewer shows on these six songs available for (paid) download. Being a genre with it's own characteristics, cleary reporting to the 90's and everything that went on there, it might not be easy to reproduce Grunge, a style of music clearly americanized, and in a anti-fashion way, some bands tend to introduce it other styles like punk, for instace. That's a strong tendency in these six songs, where it seems easy to follow the steps of the likes of Nirvana, where "Fake Me" seems to dwell. It's a major influence on the vocals as well, although the instrumental section seems to go by another path, which is the case of "Cyborg Insurrection", which finds itself at a very enjoyable level. In a time where bands choose to record their songs and make them available for free, and not wanting to go any further on that questions, which invariably ends up hurting the bands, because of the time and money spent in the recording, Skewer end up seeing this "Whatever" as a well done work, but that's it.

Besides the single "Stayed" which was known to general public, this new EP Whatever breathes some of it's air from Nirvana. Don't take it the wrong way, it's a good thing! But comparisons are not the most important thing, because we all got our roots and influences. The main point is that it's just not possible to pick the "bad" song from this EP, and though none of them could be considered "catchy", they are all very well placed in this release, even the awesome instrumental "Cyborg Insurrection". What more can be said and done about a work that inspires you on your first listen... Listen to it again! Keep rocking on!

In this "2007 Releases" edition we take a closer look at this new work from Skewer, the "Whatever" EP. These days the trend is to mix together styles and trying to be different from everyone, but Skewer go in the exact opposite way! They are different by not being different, get it? It's easy! Skewer's music is all about pure, straight rock, verse-chorus-verse-chorus! "Whatever" is all about that, It's raw, simple and at the same time melodic and catchy. That's how they see music and they wouldn't have it any other way. "Whatever" is an EP free from prejudice and is a faithful portrait of themselves. Although the word around here (Portugal) is different, one thing that's sure is that Skewer has been airing in radios and press all over the world. And that's no bull...
And now, a few words from the makers of "Whatever": "Whatever" is our first official record, and these songs tell something about the way we think of the music world. We want to pass on the freedom to play whatever you want, even if it's not 'acceptable' by today's commercial standards. With "Whatever", we want to take the listener to a world where we don't need to be original, just being true to yourselves and feel good about it, because originality is in the eye of the beholder and that's our way to see things and it's no crime! We will never change just because others tell us so! I think those people should have a listen at "Save Me From Myself" from this new EP. I'm not going to do what you tell me, I'll do whatever I want.

About whatever... Well, it's a record where it's strong point resides in "Stayed", a good opening song and without any doubt the most tailored to be the single. I loved the song from the first moment I heard it because it was very close from what I think are Skewer's objectives concerning to their sound and production. "Whatever" is a good portrait, where besides "Stayed", "Wash You Away" is a great song, very well managed. These are the two best songs on this EP, where I could pick "Fake Me" as well for it's aggressiveness and irreverence.
Between "Stayed" and "Wash You Away", I'd pick this second song as my favourite from "Whatever", although the first has better "single"-content.

"Whatever" EP is the second release from Skewer, a melancholic Grunge band hailing from Portugal, taking it's influences from Punk and Indie as well. It can really shine in moments of great rock, with meaning and clarity, proving a promising future to take in account, with tracks such as "Fake Me" or "Stayed" leading the way. We'd like to see this band from Barreiro in the top sales chart in Portugal 4 years from now. Who knows?
Reccomended for fans of old Silverchair or just rock lovers in general.

There are bands that like to play music like they were born 30 years ago, but Skewer don't go that far, settling for 18 years. Let's be honest: If it wasn't for Grunge, there would be no Skewer today. Hailing from Barreiro, their frontman is Valério, who's been a part of numerous projects from other musical genres. This time is the iconic sound popularized by Cobain and friends that takes the lead. "Whatever" is the second tome from the trio, that draws its sound on mellow guitars and a raspy voice, in an attempt to recreate the soul from the 90's. Highlights? Listen to "Wash You Away", maybe the bleakest song on the EP, and try to make your mind. On a personal stance, this isn't one of those mandatory records, but praise is deserved for the attempt to pay tribute to the sound you love, without fear of sounding like a "copy-paste". Skewer are just that: Against everyone and anyone, doing what they love, and this free-thinking spirit suits them very well. It is also important to notice, that this manifest is for the whole world to listen: The band just signed a 3-year contract with Believe from France to distribute the EP, which will be included in the catalog of the giant Virgin.! - Review Joao D. from "Blog O-Som"

Don't let yourselves be fooled by the weird name. Or maybe you might want to. Because then, you'll be in the Skewer's wavelength: Grunge is back! These are the good news that they bring us. Recalling those lost times, we have a hybrid of metal and punk, with an obvious hint of melancholy, sometimes dissonant, but always contagious; and the lyrics are as straight-forward as it gets. When you listen to Skewer, that's exactly what you get. They stroll around metal and punk, and they do it like they know the way and want to let others know as well. I hope i'm not passing the idea that this is a faithful Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Alice in Chain-esque copy. It's awesome when a band comes up with a whole new genre - genius, even - but it's as worthy when someone takes something old and makes it sound fresh again. All in all, being creative when everything else seems to already exist. Skewer is without a doubt a name to take in account, and with the appropriate support which they deserve, they could go quite far. As far as their music takes us, back to the 90's, to the melancholy and numbness of thought, a fatal inertia.
It's not by mere chance that "Stayed" has the number of hits it has. Let yourselves be taken by these weird fellows: Grunge is back! Review Chris from "Blog Faz Um Solo" 25.03.2008
